News Desk: China has taken a step in the space sector that has caught the attention of the whole world including America. Scientists at the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science have claimed to develop the world’s most powerful barium gallium Celenide (BGSE) crystal, which is capable of “blind” the enemy’s satellites in space. Through this crystal, China can create high -intensity laser beams, which can temporarily or permanently deactivate American satellites.
What is this laser crystal technology?
BGSE Crystal is a synthetic substance with a diameter of 60 millimeters. Its biggest feature is that this short wave infrared laser can be converted into mid and for-infrared laser, which can intensify up to 550 MW per square centimeters. This capacity is many times greater than existing crystals, which makes this technique fatal and strategically extremely effective.
Why is America worried?
The United States has deployed hundreds of satellites in the Low Earth Orbit, which plays a very important role in works like intelligence, monitoring and communication. This new laser technology of China can ‘blind’ these satellites, ie temporarily eliminate their optical or infrared capacity. This may affect the US Army’s ISR (Intelligence, Survelance, Reconnaissance) capacity badly.
How broad is China’s plan?
Not only Lower Orbit, China is now planning to expand its laser capabilities to medium and geosyncronous orbit. These are the same orbits where satellites such as GPS and Sbirs (Space-Based Infrared System) are deployed, which play an important role in missile warnings and global communications.
