71st National Film Awards: Why Shah Rukh Khan Didn't Win A National Award In 33 Years?

Shah Rukh Khan won the Best Actor award at the 71st National Film Awards that were announced on Friday. He won the award for his performance in the 2023 release Jawan. While his fans are very happy that the actor has finally won the award, we are sure they will always have a question in their hearts: "Why Shah Rukh Khan didn't win a National Award in 33 years?"

Shah Rukh Khan made his acting debut with Deewana in 1992. He later starred in many films, but with movies like Baazigar and Darr, his career got a boost. SRK is now one of the biggest superstars in India, and he also has a huge fan following internationally. On Friday, August 1, 2025, 71st National Film Awards were announced, and after being in the industry for 33 years, SRK finally won his first National Award for his performance in Jawan. Atlee's directorial Jawan had Shah Rukh Khan playing a double role, and he had impressed one and all with his performance in the movie.

But, is this the first time that the actor has deserved the National Award?

Shah Rukh Khan has given many amazing performances in the past 33 years. But, there are a few films in which his performance was just outstanding, and his fans were expecting that he will win a National Award. Those films are Devdas, Swades, Chak De India, and My Name Is Khan. These are undoubtedly the four best movies of SRK, and everyone had thought that he would win the National Award.

The year Devdas was eligible for the awards, the Best Actor award was given to Ajay Devgn for The Legend of Bhagat Singh. The year Swades was eligible for the awards, Saif Ali Khan won a National Award for Hum Tum.

Chak De India had won the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment award, but that year Prakash Raj was given the Best Actor award for the Tamil movie Kanchivaram. And the year, My Name Is Khan was eligible for the awards, Dhanush (Aadukalam) and Salim Kumar (Adaminte Makan Abu) had won the National Award.

There's a famous saying 'Better Late Than Never'; so we are happy that finally SRK won a National Award. But, we are sure his fans will always have this question in their hearts, "Why Shah Rukh Khan didn't win a National Award in 33 years?"
