The Department of Telecommunications blocked nearly 4 lakh SIM cards that had fake documents or over-limit connections. This action was taken with the help of the Sanchar Saathi portal and AI technology. Know the cause and effect.

SIM Blocked: The Indian Department of Telecom (DoT) has blocked nearly 4 lakh SIM cards across the country in a major operation, most of which were issued on the basis of fake documents or in violation of rules. The action was taken with the help of the Sanchar Saathi portal and AI-based digital analysis, ensuring that the authenticity of phone numbers and SIM cards is protected.

This was done with those SIM cards which had more than the limit of nine SIMs per person or whose registration was found to have errors. This campaign aims to eliminate cybercrime at its root and prevent the ill effects of fraudulent calls, SMS or financial scams. Also, SIM blocking will have an immediate impact, which has been experienced by many users through complaints lodged on the Sanchar Saathi portal.

Reasons for SIM being blocked by DoT

According to DoT, only 9 SIM cards can be issued in the name of a person as per the permission. In many areas of Bihar and Jharkhand, some people had violated this limit. Many such connections were issued with the help of fake documents. So the department has deactivated them.

What should users do?

To avoid this action and ensure their safety, users should take the following steps:

Check SIM and IMEI: Check the IMEI number by dialling *#06# on your phone and verify its validity online.

Aadhaar-based verification: Link your SIM to Aadhaar and complete the e-KYC process.

Contact DoT: If the phone gets blocked, complain to DoT’s helpline (1930) or website.

Secure sensitive data: Beware of unknown calls or messages and use strong passwords. Also, beware of calls from fake mobile numbers.
