Bihar News: National Handloom Day has completed 10 years today. National Handloom Day is celebrated every year on 7 August, so that the memory of the indigenous movement started in 1905 can be kept alive. This movement encouraged indigenous spirit and indigenous industries, including handloom weavers. In 2015, the Government of India declared this day as “National Handloom Day”.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister said that “when the war of independence was going on… at that time the handloom was a weapon for liberation from slavery. Today, a handloom can become a weapon for freedom from poverty in independent India.” The main objective of this day is to promote handloom, increase the income of weavers, and to strengthen their sense of pride.
The handloom region holds a special place in our cultural heritage. People have been learning and teaching the art of weaving and design generations. The handloom industry is not only an important medium of employment generation, but also protects our cultural heritage. The region is a major source of women empowerment, in which 72% of people working are women.

The Government of India is running several schemes to encourage the handloom sector- National Handloom Development Program, Raw Mall Supply Scheme. These schemes help the weavers in thread, loom, training, designs and selling. The government also gives loans at a cheap rate so that weavers can do their work well.
