The FIA have announced plans to enrol a new programme designed to support drivers in managing health conditions. It comes after Formula One icon Sebastian Vettel pressured the sport's governing body to do more in supporting drivers with their mental health.

The four-time world champion believes drivers have been hesitant to speak out if they're struggling and has suggested the FIA should take a more proactive approach. Vettel claims motorsport doesn't pay enough attention to mental health conditions, with the former driver hinting they should be treated equally to physical health or injuries.

It looks as if steps are being taken to address that, with the FIA announcing what they describe as "pioneering medical guidelines". In a statement, the FIA said: "They are intended to assist drivers and National Sporting Authorities (ASNs) in making informed healthcare decisions, while also ensuring full compliance with FIA medical and anti-doping regulations.

"By publishing this extensive document, the FIA reaffirms its commitment to protecting and supporting the health, performance and development of drivers across all motor sport disciplines. The inclusion of condition management advice and guidance is also intended to ensure that, wherever possible, health conditions do not restrict participation in motor sport events, enabling widespread participation."

They added: "Furthermore, by providing free and open access to the document the FIA is also encouraging ASNs to embed these guidelines in national level competitions and supporting grassroots competitors as they begin their motor sport careers. The publication has been widely praised by drivers, teams, and medical professionals as a vital resource that promotes safety, fairness and inclusivity in motor sport."

Lando Norris is among the current Formula One drivers to have opened up about mental health struggles in motorsport, admitting he has suffered from anxiety in the past. The McLaren man believes younger drivers coming through the ranks could be more vulnerable to struggling, especially since the advent of social media opened drivers up to more online criticism.

Vettel originally spoke out about the issue back in 2022, saying: "I think mental health is just as important, if not more important, than physical health. If you break your leg or feel pain in your body, then we all see it as advisable to see a doctor for help, but we don't think so when it comes to mental health."
