YouTube is now going to crack down on children and teenagers who fill in their age incorrectly while signing up. The company is going to launch a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) based age verification system in the United States (USA) on August 13. This system will also identify users who are under the age of 18, even if they have entered the wrong date of birth while creating the account.

So far, YouTube has relied only on the date of birth given during sign-up. But this new system will guess the age of the user by looking at the signs of different activities. What will these signs be? Such as what kind of videos you watch, what you search for on the platform, and how long your account has been active. YouTube aims to catch cases where minors are using the accounts of older people or lying about their age.

What will happen if caught?

If YouTube's AI system determines that an account belongs to a person under the age of 18, some restrictions will be imposed on it immediately. First of all, personalized ads (which appear according to your preferences) will stop on that account. Apart from this, digital wellbeing features will be automatically enabled, such as bedtime reminders and monitoring screen time. And yes, certain types of content, especially those that can be harmful if viewed repeatedly, will also be blocked.

YouTube says that this step is part of their continuous effort to protect children and teens from inappropriate content and data collection for targeted advertising. However, YouTube also admits that its AI model is not completely perfect. It is also possible that some adults are mistakenly marked as minors, such as parents who often watch children's content.

What if you are banned by mistake?

If this happens, the account holder will have to verify their age to remove the restrictions. For this, they will have to submit a government-issued identity card, upload a selfie for comparison, or provide credit card information. Although these methods will prove the identity, some users may hesitate to share their personal information with the platform, which may raise privacy concerns.
