Mumbai: In Hinduism, just as deities are worshipped, ancestors — known as Pitrs — are also revered. It is believed that ancestors play a significant role in bringing happiness, peace, and prosperity into the lives of their descendants. As per religious beliefs, the Pitrs reside in Pitrlok and descend to Earth during Pitru Paksha, a 15-day period dedicated to honouring them. During this time, rituals such as shraddha, tarpan (offering of water), and charitable donations are performed in their name. These acts are said to bring peace to the souls of the departed and blessings to their living family members.
This year, the beginning of Pitru Paksha coincides with a rare celestial event — a lunar eclipse. According to the Hindu calendar (Panchang), Pitru Paksha in 2025 will commence on 7 September with the full moon (Purnima), and conclude on 21 September with Sarva Pitru Amavasya. Remarkably, on the very day the fortnight begins, the last lunar eclipse of the year will occur — one that will be visible across India. This unique overlap is drawing special attention among astrologers and devotees alike.
When will the second lunar eclipse of 2025 occur?
As per Indian Standard Time, the year’s second lunar eclipse will begin on 7 September at 9:58 pm and end on 8 September at 1:26 am, lasting for a total of 3 hours and 29 minutes. This will be a total lunar eclipse, visible not only in India but also across several countries worldwide. The Sutak period — considered inauspicious in Hindu tradition — will begin on 6 September at 12:57 pm and will continue until the eclipse ends. Special precautions are therefore advised for those performing Purnima Shraddha.
Should Shraddha rituals be performed during the eclipse?
Astrologers caution that during an eclipse, negative energies are said to become more dominant, making it generally inauspicious to conduct sacred rites such as shraddha. However, if the ritual is unavoidable, it is recommended to wait until the Sutak period ends and then proceed during an auspicious time (shubh muhurat). Consulting an experienced priest for guidance is advised for those wishing to honour their ancestors while respecting traditional rules associated with an eclipse.
