CBSE has announced a new system of taking the 10th board exam twice a year from 2026, so that students can improve their marks.

CBSE has decided to make a big change in the board exam system of class 10, due to which students will now get an additional chance to improve their studies and get better marks. Under this new system, starting from 2026, there will be board exams for class 10 twice a year.

Board exams twice a year

The first exam will be held in mid-February every year, which will be compulsory for all students. Students who pass this exam can, if they want, improve their marks in the second exam to be held in May. In this second exam, they can sit in a maximum of three subjects from subjects like science, mathematics, social science and language.

Who will not get a chance?

If a student fails in three or more subjects in the first exam, he will not get a chance to appear in the second exam. Such students will be put in the "required repetition" category, that is, they will have to appear for the exam again next year. However, students whose results fall in the "compartment" category can appear for the paper for the second time under the compartment exam.

Special provisions will also be applicable

CBSE has also ensured that students participating in sports, students of schools studying in winter and children with special needs also get equal opportunity and flexibility. For this, there will be an internal assessment once before the main examination. The special thing is that the syllabus of both the first and second exams will be based on the syllabus of the whole year, so that the students do not face any kind of inequality.

Further process

The results of the first exam will be declared in April, while the result of the second exam will come in June. Students can take provisional admission in class 11 on the basis of their first exam marks, but the final admission will be confirmed only after the results of the second exam. Apart from this, the qualifying certificate will also be given only after the second examination.

Why was the change made?

CBSE believes that this “two-exam system” will give more flexibility to the students, maintain continuity of learning and reduce the stress caused by a single big exam at the end of the year. This change is in line with the guidelines of the National Education Policy (NEP-2020) and will help in the overall development of students
