The Asia Cup 2025 is set to begin on September 9, with the highly anticipated India-Pakistan clash scheduled for September 14. However, even before the first ball is bowled, the fixture is mired in controversy. Several former cricketers have voiced their opposition to the encounter, calling for India to boycott matches against Pakistan.
Kedar Jadhav Opposes India-Pakistan MatchFormer Indian cricketer and BJP leader Kedar Jadhav has become the latest name to oppose the clash. Known for his strong views, Jadhav declared that India should not play against Pakistan in the Asia Cup.
“I think the Indian team should not play at all. Wherever India plays, I believe we will win. But this match should not happen,” Jadhav said, also citing the success of Operation Sindoor as an example of India’s strength.
Harbhajan Singh and Azharuddin Had Their Say TooKedar Jadhav isn’t alone in this stance. Earlier, former spinner Harbhajan Singh had also backed a boycott, saying:
“Cricket comes later, the country and its brave soldiers come first.”
Even Mohammad Azharuddin, the former India captain, supported Harbhajan’s sentiment. However, he added that the final call rests with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Pakistani Cricketers’ Fear of Facing IndiaInterestingly, opposition to the clash isn’t limited to India. Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has also suggested that the match should not take place. His reason, however, is entirely different—he fears Pakistan could face a humiliating defeat at India’s hands in the current circumstances.
A Match Under ShadowThe India-Pakistan rivalry has always been more than just a cricket game—it carries political and emotional weight for both nations. With growing calls for boycott, the question now is whether fans will witness the marquee clash on September 14 or if the voices of dissent will force a last-minute change.
