In such a situation, the initial priority is being given to these places. However, due to opposition from animal rights activists, the number of dogs caught so far remains limited.

A senior municipal corporation officer said on the condition of anonymity that people have more movement in these places and complaints are also available. He said, “Eating places inside government offices, schools and hospitals cannot be allowed. Apart from dogs complaining many times, our initial priority is to make such complexes safe. We have already started this campaign.” The officer also informed that dozens of stray dogs have been removed from several municipal offices including the Civic Center of MCD.

The Supreme Court has given strict instructions to the officials of Delhi and NCR (Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurugram) that all stray dogs should be immediately removed from the roads and kept them in shelters. The court has also made it clear that no dog caught will be allowed to be released again on the streets.

Animal rights workers protest

Meanwhile, animal rights activists have expressed displeasure over the decisions of the Supreme Court and the action of MCD. He says that removing dogs from the streets is their freedom and intervention in natural life. The workers argue that the government should first build a large and human shelter home so that dogs can get safe and better environment. Some organizations have also warned that if there is a hurry in implementing this order, then the good and health of the animals will have a serious impact.

The Supreme Court has ordered the officials to build a shelter home for at least 5,000 dogs within six to eight weeks and a massive catching campaign should be started. It has also been asked to ensure that the areas of Delhi and NCR are completely free from stray dogs.
