Indian selectors face the flak over omission of Shreyas Iyer, Yashasvi Jaiswal from Asia Cup squad

New Delhi: The Indian selectors on Tuesday faced the flak over the axing of Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal from India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad. The BCCI announced a 15-member squad for the continental tournament on August 19 with Iyer and Jaiswal being among the big names to have missed on a spot for the marquee event, which begins on September 9 in the UAE.

While Jaiswal was named in the 5-member standby list at least, Iyer’s name was nowhere to be seen attracting a lot of criticism from the cricketing fraternity as well as the fans. Despite being in a fine touch in the shortest format as well as the 50-overs, Iyer failed to make a cut which raised a plethora of questions on BCCI’s selection process, even though it might have been a problem of plenty for the Indian cricket board.

Here’s a glimpse of Iyer’s recent stats

As far as his overall stats in the T20 internationals is concerned, the seasoned batter has scored a total of 1104 runs in 51 matches with an impressive average of over 30 and a strike rate of over 136. With 8 half-centuries to his name, Iyer has proven as a useful hand for Indian cricket in the 20-over format. Despite this, his last appearance in T20Is came back in December 2023 against Australia where he played a pivotal role with a half-century.

The seasoned batter did not be in the scheme of things for BCCI in the entire last year and half of 2025. This was the same time where the right-hander shut the critics with his fine performances and leadership abilities in the T20s. In 2024 IPL, not only did Iyer score over 350 runs for Kolkata Knight Riders but also led the franchise to their third IPL title. In this year’s IPL, Iyer scored massive 600-plus runs in the edition leading his new franchise Punjab Kings to the summit clash.

In addition, Iyer has had a terrific record in domestic T20s as he captained Mumbai to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 and also guided SoBo Mumbai Falcons to the final of the Mumbai T20 League 2025.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s stats in T20 internationals

The flamboyant southpaw has scored 723 runs in a total of 23 T20 internationals for India which constitute a fantastic stat list for Jaiswal in the shortest format. With five half-centuries, a century and a strike rate of close to 165, his omission from the crucial Asia Cup squad didn’t seem to be justified. Before becoming a regular member of India’s Test team, Iyer performed well in the T20Is.

The young gun played his last T20I match for India in July last year against Sri Lanka where he scored 80 runs in the series. In the T20 World Cup 2024, Jaiswal was part of the 15-member squad but did not get even one match to play. Talking about the IPL, Jaiswal scored 559 runs in 14 matches and was among the top-scorers in the 2025 edition. In the 2023 IPL as well, he scored 625 runs in the edition marking his supremacy in the format.

While many were in the queue to criticise the Indian selectors for the squad for Asia Cup, former off-spinner R Ashwin also blasted the BCCI for axing the duo. Ashwin questioned the reasons and the logic for not including Iyer and Jaiswal for the all-important showpiece event.
