
New Delhi: Arunachal Pradesh’s Govt Higher Secondary School defeated Odisha’s Sainik School 1-0 in the opening match of the 64th edition of the Subroto Cup International Football Tournament at the BR Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Following a grand opening ceremony, Air Marshal S Sivakumar VSM, Air Officer-in-Charge Administration & Vice Chairman Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Society, declared the tournament open.
The tournament kicked off with a Group A match in the junior girls (Under 17) category, with Luky Liam Tamin scoring the match winner in the ninth minute.
“The 64th Subroto Cup is a testament to the enduring spirit of football in India. I am confident that this tournament will not only showcase the skills of these young athletes but also inspire many more to take up the sport,” Sivakumar said in his opening address.
A total of 31 teams, divided into eight groups, including teams from Sri Lanka, will be competing for honours in the junior girls category. The group winners from each group will qualify for the knockouts that culminate in the final on August 28 at the Ambedkar Stadium.

A total of 106 teams will participate in the tournament in three categories – junior boys (U-17), girls (U-17) and sub-junior boys (U-15). The competition will stretch till September 25.

Over 200 matches will be played in New Delhi NCR and Bengaluru, after which top players of the tournament shall be selected through final trials for training in Germany under TV9 Network’s News9 Indian Tigers and Tigresses talent hunt initiative.
A total prize money of Rs 35,60,000 has been announced for the competition, whose matches will be held at the Tejas football ground, Subroto Park football ground and Pinto Park football grounds in New Delhi.
In Bengaluru, matches will be held at the Air Force School Jalahalli, the Air Force School, Yelahanka and the HQ Training Command Football Ground.
