Fallout and Sweet Pea star Ella Purnell has helped release the first trailer for the second season of Prime Video's hit show.

It has confirmed the introduction of iconic characters from the original game series, along with the release date for the return of the much-loved video game adaptation.

Fans can now eagerly anticipate new episodes on 17 December.

The upcoming season will continue in the aftermath of the thrilling finale of Season One, taking viewers on a journey through the Mojave wasteland to the post-apocalyptic city of New Vegas.

The release date and the newly unveiled footage were both announced at the Opening Night Live event of Gamescom in Cologne.

Gamescom is an annual video game convention that brings together developers, publishers and fans from all over the world.

A two-hour live stream, hosted by Geoff Keighley, showcased the latest trailers for new and forthcoming games, often revealing additional surprises along the way.

This year, Fallout's showrunner Jonathan Nolan was joined on stage by other members of his creative team and star Ella Purnell to tease the show's return.

Nolan confirmed that as writers, there was a character from the game series they found intriguing and wondered if they could incorporate into the series, reports the Mirror.

They then unveiled the first teaser trailer for the second season of Fallout. It didn't take long for fans to figure out who they were referring to.

Footage revealed confirms that Justin Theroux is joining the cast and will portray legendary character Mr House. Within the game, Mr House serves as New Vegas' ruler who employs numerous robots and surveillance cameras to monitor activities.

The material also verifies that viewers will witness a Deathclaw making its debut appearance in the series.

These beasts represent a fearsome adversary for Fallout gamers and constitute a species of genetically modified reptiles designed to substitute certain soldiers in battlefield operations for dangerous assignments.

Nevertheless, countless additional Easter Eggs were crammed into the preview that enthusiasts are already dissecting. During one moment, Lucy discharges a weapon and the projectile can be observed travelling in slow motion.

This not only appears to reference the VATS combat mechanism in the game where players can decelerate time, but it also mirrors the opening sequence from Fallout New Vegas, where a marksman executes an identical shot.

Familiar settings were also spotted as one supporter observed: "Deathclaws, Mr House, the Legion, VICTOR, Ella in the Dino's Mouth at Novac.... I can't cope, this is going to be amazing!"

Another contributed: "It's so peak... all these locations, characters and vats... It brings so many memories."

Someone else remarked: "NEW VEGAS, Mr House, Caesar's Legion, Lucky 38 and the Deathclaw. This is gonna be PEAK."

Fallout season two is streaming on Prime Video from December 17.
