Prices of Monthong durian, a Thai variety grown in Vietnam, have jumped by 15-20% to VND80,000-90,000 (US$3.04-3.42) per kilogram. Vietnamese Ri 6 prices remain stable at VND40,000-42,0000.
Earlier this year Vietnamese durian prices had plummeted as exports stalled following China’s tightening of quality requirements, especially with regard to residues of banned substances.

But traders say since June enhanced control and inspections in Vietnam has improved the situation, resulting in higher export prices.
Manh Khuong, a trader in Can Tho City in the Mekong Delta, reported low supply as the harvest season comes to an end.
Thanh, a trader in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak, said the harvest is just beginning and so output is still limited and fruit quality is inconsistent. “I can only buy one to two tons daily even as export demand is rising, and this is pushing prices up.”
In the southern province of Dong Nai, trader Hieu said he is buying durian for export to Taiwan and China, and prices have risen to VND95,000.
He said the biggest challenge is securing enough high-quality fruits to meet export requirements. Traders expect the prices to stabilize in around two weeks when the harvest reaches its peak in Dak Lak Province.
Doan Van Ven, CEO of Anh Thư Dak Lak Co., said his company has resumed normal exports to China after more than six months of difficulties. “Customs clearance and quarantine procedures have become faster and smoother.”
In January 170 tons of durian were returned to the company as China’s tightened regulations prevented clearance at the border.
In the first quarter durian exports averaged less than $100 million a month. It rose slightly above that figure in April before reaching $204 million in May and surging above $300 million in June.
The July figure is estimated at $350-400 million. Exports are likely to have exceeded $1 billion comfortably in the year to date.
