
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was on Wednesday assaulted during an outreach event at her official residence in Civil Lines.
Gupta suffered a light blow to her head, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Delhi chief Virendra Sachdeva was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
The attacker was apprehended by the police and was being questioned, ANI quoted the chief minister’s office as saying. He has been identified as Rajesh Bhai Sakaria, an autorickshaw driver from Gujarat’s Rajkot.
His mother, Bhanuben Sakaria, said that her son is not associated with any political party, and that he had gone to Delhi to protest the Supreme Court bench’s order on capturing street dogs and placing them in shelters, The Hindu reported.
Another bench of the court on August 14 reserved its verdict on petitions challenging the earlier ruling.
Sachdeva told reporters that a man had approached Gupta, presented some papers and “suddenly held her hand while trying to pull her towards him”.
“During this, there was a little jostling...People nabbed him,” Sachdeva said. “Who is he, and all other details are being investigated by the police...”
Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi said that the attack on Gupta was “highly condemnable”.
