Guwahati's Road Woes

Guwahati, August 20: The roads in Guwahati have become a daily challenge for commuters due to the ongoing construction of flyovers.

In areas like Chandmari, the construction of the Maharaj Prithu flyover and the junction at Lal Ganesh’s Cycle Factory highlight the issues—potholes, uneven surfaces, and dust-laden stretches complicate even the shortest trips.

Rain exacerbates the situation, making roads slippery and unpredictable. Traffic jams further complicate matters, forcing residents to navigate through debris and mud on their way to work or business.

Each commute feels like an arduous journey, testing the patience and resilience of the city's inhabitants as they try to balance development with everyday life.

Many residents believe that poorly executed repairs often make the situation worse.

“Driving here is extremely challenging. Vehicles frequently get stuck in potholes, leading to traffic congestion. Authorities sometimes use sand to fill the holes, but it washes away with the rain, leaving behind mud and water,” shared Mintu Rajbongshi, a commuter from Chandmari.

Some locals suggest that even temporary solutions could provide significant relief. “Authorities don’t need to fully pave the road; just temporary filling would alleviate commuters’ difficulties,” remarked a local resident.

For many, the state of the roads has raised serious safety concerns.

“The roads are in terrible condition. With so many potholes, it’s only a matter of time before a car flips over. Even covering a short distance takes much longer,” expressed Jyoti Kumar Sarma, an elderly resident of Chandmari Colony.

Residents have also noted that the poor road conditions have already led to accidents. "There have been incidents here due to the bad roads. Authorities must address these repairs urgently,” stated Santosh Barman, a local from Cycle Factory.

Daily commuters express their frustration, stating that timely repairs could ease traffic and enhance safety. “If the roads were fixed, even temporarily, traffic congestion would lessen, and commuting would be much smoother,” said Moon Ali, a resident near Cycle Factory.

As monsoon rains worsen the conditions, residents are hopeful that authorities will take swift action for at least temporary fixes until the flyovers are completed.

For now, the daily struggle with potholes, mud, and traffic congestion continues to burden Guwahati’s commuters.
