Weather Update for Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Following a series of heavy downpours caused by a low-pressure system affecting various regions in Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the potential development of another low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal near the Odisha coast.

The IMD's bulletin released on Friday indicated that this new low-pressure system is expected to form around August 25, 2025, over the northwest Bay of Bengal, close to the Odisha-West Bengal coastline.

In light of the ongoing weather conditions, the IMD has issued a red warning for the Sundargarh district, predicting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms in certain areas.

An orange warning has also been placed for districts such as Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, and Jharsuguda, where very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are anticipated.

Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for several districts, including Deogarh, Angul, Kandhamal, and others, forecasting heavy rain in isolated locations.

The IMD expects rainfall to persist across various districts of Odisha until August 27.

Residents in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, and Jharsuguda are advised to monitor weather updates closely and prepare to relocate to safer areas if necessary.

The IMD has also warned of possible localized landslides and mudslides due to the continuous rainfall in these districts.

Previously, a low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal near the northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha coasts, which later intensified into a depression, resulting in significant rainfall across the state.
