The government has notified the higher registration charges for vehicles older than 20 years, almost double the existing rates, a move aimed at discouraging the use of vehicles which have outlived their utility and to cut down on vehicular pollution which accounts for 40% of the pollution in the country.
As per the notification, the renewal of certificate of registration for motorcycles older than 20 years has been raised from Rs 1000 to Rs 2000 while for three-wheelers the fee has been increased from Rs 3500 to Rs 5000.
Further, the cost of renewal of light motor vehicles has been raised to Rs 10,000, those of imported two-wheelers or three-wheelers has been increased to Rs 20000 while the cost of registration renewal for old imported cars has been raised to Rs 80000 from the existing Rs 10000 and Rs 40000 for imported motorcycles and cars respectively.
“All fees specified are exclusive of Goods and Services Tax,” the ministry of road transport and highways said in a notification dated August 20, 2025.
The ministry had issued a draft amendment in February listing fees for vehicles older than 20 years, a shift from the past where higher registration charges were applied on vehicles older than 15 years.
The move will help discourage the use of vehicles manufactured before the introduction of BS-II emission norms and will help the government bring down vehicular pollution.
The last hike came in October 2021 under the vehicle scrappage policy, covering two-and three-wheelers, quadricycles, and LMVs.
