The government has made a big change in the rules related to PAN card, which will come into effect from July 1, 2025. If you do not follow these rules, you may have to pay a heavy fine.

The new rule comes into effect from July 1, 2025

From now onwards, the Aadhaar card has become mandatory for making a PAN card. Any person will be able to get a new PAN card only when they enter their Aadhaar number in their application. Apart from this, the mobile number linked to Aadhaar is also necessary because the verification process will be completed through the OTP received on it.

Those with old PAN cards will also have to link

If your PAN card is already made, but has not yet been linked to Aadhaar, then it is mandatory to link it by 31 December 2025. If not linked within the stipulated time limit, your PAN card will be made inactive.

  • Will not be able to file an income tax return
  • It will be difficult to open or operate a bank account
  • Will not be able to invest in the stock market or mutual funds
  • There will be problems in buying and selling property
  • TDS and TCS will be deducted at higher rates
Penalty for not linking PAN with Aadhaar

If you have not linked PAN to Aadhaar and still use that PAN for bank or other financial transactions, a fine of ₹1,000 will be levied.

Apart from this, ₹1,000 will also have to be paid to reactivate the inactive PAN. This process can be done through the e-pay tax portal. Your PAN card will be reactivated within 7 to 30 days of payment.

₹10,000 fine on duplicate PAN card

If a person possesses two or more PAN cards or deliberately uses a wrong PAN number, a penalty of up to ₹10,000 will be levied under section 272B of the Income Tax Act.

If by mistake you have two PAN cards, then surrender one of them immediately; otherwise, you may have to pay this huge fine.
