Mumbai: September 2025 is set to be an extraordinary month for sky-watchers and spiritual believers alike. Two major celestial events are lined up – a lunar eclipse on 7 September and a solar eclipse on 21 September. Both will be visible in India, giving them added significance not only in astronomy but also in religious and astrological traditions.

In Hindu scriptures, eclipses are believed to carry strong cosmic energies that can influence human life. While many consider them times of spiritual practice and prayer, for expectant mothers, these periods are regarded as especially sensitive. Texts warn that unborn children may be more vulnerable to negative energies during eclipses, which is why ancient traditions prescribe special care and rituals for pregnant women.

Key dates of eclipses in September 2025

7 September 2025 – Lunar Eclipse (fully visible in India)

21 September 2025 – Solar Eclipse (partially visible in India)

Both eclipses are marked as astrologically important, and experts advise pregnant women to follow traditional dos and don’ts to ensure safety and peace of mind.

What pregnant women should do during an eclipse (Dos)

Apply geru (red ochre) on the stomach: According to tradition, this protects the unborn child from harmful influences.

Chant mantras and read scriptures: Reciting Ram Raksha Stotra, Hanuman Chalisa, Vishnu Sahasranama, or verses from the Bhagavad Gita is considered highly auspicious. Repetition of mantras like Om Namah Shivaya or Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya is also recommended.

Keep holy items nearby: Having sacred grass (Kusha), Tulsi leaves, or Ganga water is believed to offer purification and protection.

Rest and meditate: Eclipses are seen as a powerful time to draw in positive energy through calmness and reflection.

Take a ritual bath after the eclipse: Once the eclipse ends, bathing and changing into clean clothes before eating is an essential step.

What pregnant women should avoid during an eclipse (Don’ts)

Do not view the eclipse directly: It is believed to affect the unborn child negatively.

Avoid cutting or using sharp objects: Using knives, scissors, or needles is considered inauspicious.

Refrain from eating cooked food: Food prepared before an eclipse is thought to become impure during the period.

Do not step outside: Expectant mothers are advised to remain indoors until the eclipse ends.

Avoid stress or heavy work: Maintaining a calm and steady mind is seen as essential for protection.

Ayurveda and science on eclipses

Ayurveda suggests that cosmic rays during eclipses have the strongest impact on pregnant women and their unborn children. Rituals such as applying geru, keeping Kusha, and chanting mantras are viewed as protective shields.

Modern science, however, does not find evidence of physical harm from eclipses. Yet experts agree that following these traditions can offer psychological comfort, reduce stress, and provide expectant mothers with a sense of spiritual safety during this rare cosmic alignment.
