
Five passengers lost their lives when a tourist bus crashed on a New York highway on Friday. The accident occurred approximately 25 miles (40 km) east of Buffalo as the bus was returning to New York City after a visit to Niagara Falls. Victims included passengers of Indian, Chinese, and Filipino origin.
Cause of the AccidentNew York State Police Commander Major Andre Ray stated that preliminary investigations suggest the driver was distracted, leading to a loss of control. There were 54 passengers on board, none of them children. Some passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated at nearby hospitals before being discharged. No mechanical failure or intoxication was found, and the bus driver survived unharmed.
Response and Rescue EffortsThe accident occurred near Pembroke, on a highway close to the Canadian border. Eight helicopters were deployed for relief and rescue operations. Translators were brought in to assist communication with victims and their families.
Officials RespondNew York Governor Kathy Hochul said her team is coordinating with state police and local authorities to manage the situation. The blood and organ donation network Connect Life appealed to citizens to donate blood in response to the emergency. Senior US Senator Chuck Schumer expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
