Pakistan Bangladesh Relations: Bangladesh on Sunday raised the pending issues, including apologizing for the 1971 war before Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Dar is the most senior leader of Pakistan to visit Dhaka since 2012. Dar reached Dhaka on Saturday on a two -day visit to Bangladesh. His aim is to improve relations with Bangladesh again after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepped away from the post. Dar interacted with M Tauheed Hussain, Foreign Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh.

Tauheed Hussain told reporters after meeting with Dar, “We have raised unresolved issues, such as apologizing or regretting for 1971, claiming assets, and the case of trapped Pakistani citizens.” He said that it would be wrong to expect that the problems of 54 years will be solved in a single day.

Musharraf tried to suggest controversy

“Both countries have presented their own status on these issues,” a foreign advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh said at a press conference. Dar said that the unresolved issues of 1971 were resolved twice. In 1974, in a tripartite negotiations of New Delhi in India, the then President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf, resolved the issue of massacre during his Dhaka visit.

Hussain reported that an agreement and five compromise memorandum (MOU) were signed between the two countries. Hussain said that the two countries have agreed that historical issues should be resolved through discussion to further bilateral relations.

Important agreements between the two

There have been six important agreements between the two countries during Dar’s visit to Bangladesh. It includes free visa travel to political agreements. Apart from this, Pakistan has announced a scholarship to Bangladeshi students who have received higher education in the country for the next five years. However, Pakistan itself is dependent on foreign help to run the country.
