Novak Djokovic Creates History; Becomes First Player In The World To Achieve Extraordinary Feat

Novak Djokovic achieved a special milestone as he extended his massive world record as he began his campaign in the 2025 US Open in style on Sunday (August 24) at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York with a straight-sets win over unseeeded American star Learner Tien by a 6-1, 7-6(7-3), and 6-3 margin.
The Serbian is aiming to end a two-year wait for a major title and win a record 25th Grand Slam trophy. The Serbian will now face another home country player as he is set to go head-to-head against Zachary Svajda on Wednesday (August 27), with the time and court yet to be determined.
Novak Djokovic Hits An Unprecedented High
The win over Tien marked the 75th instance in a row of Djokovic progressing to the second round of a major. He is the first male or female player in Tennis history during the Open Era to win 75 opening round games in a row. The 24-time Grand Slam champion had broken a record that belonged to Roger Federer a few years back.

Djokovic has not lost a first-round game for 19 years, with the last such instance coming in 2006, when he was a teenager. Infact, the Serbian has lost in the opening round of a major just twice in his career, which came in the 2005 and 2006 Australian Open.
Apart from the year's first slam, which Djokovic has won a record 10 times, he has not lost in the opening round at any other major. At both the Wimbledon and French Open, he has a 20-0 record in the first round, while he has won on all 19 instances at Flushing Meadows. At the Australian Open, he has an 18-2 record.
Among players to have played more than 20 Grand Slams, the 38-year-old has the best win percentage in the opening round.

Djokovic is playing the 80th Grand Slam of his career, which is the second-most, putting him just behind Feliciano Lopez and Federer (81).
Although the Serbian has not won a major title since the 2023 French Open, he has continued to do well in the competitions. He has won the first round of all four slams this year for the 16th time in a row, which is the most for any player, having broken Federer's record (14) last year.
