The threat of cyber attack on India is increasing, and you may be shocked to know that India is the target of hackers. Recently, a report by the Swiss cybersecurity firm Acronis states that India is at the top of the list of targets of those carrying out cyber attacks; in this case, India has left behind even Brazil and Spain.
The report mentions that in May, malware was detected in 12.4 percent of devices running on the Windows operating system in India, which means that those using the Windows operating system face the highest number of cybercrime incidents, which is the highest in the world. This figure had increased to 13.2 percent in June.
Cases increased from 2024 to 2025
Mint's report quoted Acronis as saying that cyber attacks on official emails have increased from 20 percent in early 2024 to 25.6 percent by the first half of 2025. The cybersecurity firm says that cyber criminals are now using AI tools for personal information like credit cards and passwords.
These industries are most at risk of attack.
The report mentions that generative AI has reduced the barriers for cybercriminals. Due to this, it has now become difficult to detect phishing emails, fake invoices, and even deepfake-based scams quickly.
Acronis India and South Asia General Manager Rajesh Chhabra said that the hybrid work model after the pandemic (COVID) has made companies vulnerable through these secure remote setups. The report states that manufacturing, information technology service, and telecom industry are among the most risky sectors in India.
What is Malware
Malware is a software program or code that is used by hackers to break into a computer or network. Hackers even take control of the device through this dangerous malware. The report also warns that many major threats are looming over India's digital ecosystem.
