NRAI's Sudden Policy Shift Causes Frustration Among Shooters

A recent alteration in the selection criteria by the national federation has left several shotgun shooters feeling frustrated as they prepare for the upcoming trials in Bathinda, scheduled from September 1.

Previously, an announcement made on August 14 indicated that the scores from these trials would contribute to team selection for 2026. However, a new notice issued by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) on Monday stated that these scores would not be factored into next year's selections.

The official statement on the NRAI website clarified, 'In continuation of NRAI Notification dated 12th August 2025, it is hereby notified that the said Notification regarding consideration of scores of Selection Trial 4 — Shotgun (Bathinda, 1st-7th September 2025) under Selection Criteria 2026 stands withdrawn.'

The circular further explained that the scores from Selection Trial 4 would not contribute to the Selection Criteria for 2026, a decision made with the approval of the NRAI President.

This unexpected change has left some shooters bewildered, especially those who have already made non-refundable travel and accommodation arrangements for the trials.

One anonymous shooter expressed their discontent, stating, 'With non-refundable hotel and flight bookings, this sudden announcement renders the trial pointless for many of us.' They added, 'For those needing to maintain their rankings, participation is still necessary, but for others, this trial is a complete waste of time. It's frustrating that the federation keeps altering criteria at the last minute.'

Another shooter suggested that the changes might be intended to benefit certain individuals close to the federation, noting, 'The trials were initially set for Patiala but were moved to Bathinda. This latest change, just days before the trials, seems designed to assist a few shooters who have performed poorly in Patiala.'

The earlier communication had indicated that scores from the trial could be considered for selection. 'The Trial 4 in shotgun events is being conducted at Patiala from 1st to 7th September 2025. It is notified that the scores of this Trial may also be considered for selection of teams under Selection Criteria 2026. The athletes are advised to ensure their participation in Trial 4,' the previous circular stated.

In response to the backlash, NRAI President Kalikesh Singh Deo refuted claims of favoritism, asserting, 'We are not doing any favors. We are simply clarifying the ambiguity in the earlier circular that stated scores 'may be considered.' This change was made based on recommendations from coaches and the high-performance director, as the trials were too close to a major competition, making it unnecessary to make participation mandatory.'
