
New Delhi: Double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra has aimed at reclaiming the Diamond League trophy with a repeat of the 90m show which has highlighted this season so far. Chopra aims to throw another 90m when the coveted 14-leg series comes to a close on Thursday.
There were four Diamond League meetings which had the men’s javelin throw and Neeraj competed in only two, qualifying for the finals at fourth place with 15 points. Chopra skipper the events at the Silesia and Brussels on August 16 and August 22 respectively. The Indian javelin star last clinched the Diamond League trophy in 2022.
Meanwhile, the top six players from the points table from the four meetings qualify for the Finals and since there are 32 events, both male and female, the Diamond League is spread over two days. Out of the total 32 events, six events are being held on Wednesday in the Swiss city’s Sechselautenplatz. The events to be held on August 27 are men’s and women’s pole vault, men’s and women’s shot put, men’s long jump, and women’s high jump.
Letzigrund Stadium to host remaining 26 eventsThe remaining 26 events will be held inside the Letzigrund Stadium on Thursday. The javelin star who emerges as winner of each event at the Diamond League Final will be named this year’s champion and get a Diamond League trophy including prize money ranging from USD 30,000 to USD 50,000 and wild card entries to next month’s World Championships in Tokyo.
Meanwhile, a thrilling contest is on the card’s in the men’s javelin with Neeraj facing defending champion Anderson Peters of Grenada as well as Germany’s Julian Weber in the seven-man final. Neeraj breached the 90m mark at Doha with a throw of 90.23m, though finishing second behind Weber. The 27-year-old Indian superstar then won the Paris leg on June 20 with a throw of 88.16m.
