The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has begun a three-day dialogue program at Vigyan Bhavan, Delhi, from 26 to 28 August to mark the completion of 100 years of the organization. The event, titled “100 Years of Sangh Journey: New Horizons,” was inaugurated with an address by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. Speaking on the first day, he sought to clarify the Sangh’s vision of a “Hindu Rashtra.”

“Hindu Rashtra not about power”

Bhagwat said, “When we talk about Hindu Rashtra, many questions arise because we translate ‘Rashtra’ as ‘Nation’, which is a Western concept where the ‘State’ is tied to the Nation. But ‘Rashtra’ does not necessarily mean State. Our nation has always existed—independent of who ruled.”

He stressed that Hindu Rashtra is not about political power or excluding anyone. “The government of the day has always worked with equal justice for all. Saying Hindu Rashtra doesn’t mean we are against others. The Sangh has never come out in protest against any community,” he added.

Explaining the meaning of “Hindu”

Bhagwat explained that the word “Hindu” is not limited to religion. Rather, it reflects a sense of responsibility towards the nation, culture, and humanity.

  • Hindu means inclusion without limits.

  • A Hindu is one who respects others’ faith, follows their own path, does not convert others, and does not insult different traditions.

  • “Saying Hindu does not mean Hindu versus all—it means unity and acceptance,” Bhagwat said.

India’s unity and shared heritage

The Sangh chief also highlighted the idea of unity in diversity. “The DNA of the people of India has been the same for 40,000 years. Those who believe in Mother India and their ancestors are true Hindus. Some call themselves Hindus, some Sanatanis, some Indians—the words may differ but the devotion is the same.”

He said that even those who earlier distanced themselves are gradually acknowledging their Hindu identity. “It is not about forcing anyone. When quality of life improves, people naturally return to their roots. Our task is to organize the entire Hindu society.”
