Mohan Bhagwat's Vision for Hindu Rashtra
On Tuesday, Mohan Bhagwat, the leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), emphasized that the organization's concept of a 'Hindu Rashtra' is not intended to exclude any community. According to reports, he stated, “When we refer to Hindu Rashtra, we do not imply that anyone will be left out or that we oppose anyone. The Sangh does not operate that way.”
The RSS, which is the ideological parent of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has faced criticism for its portrayal of India as a Hindu nation.
Bhagwat made these remarks during the launch of a three-day lecture series commemorating the RSS's centenary, where he plans to discuss the organization's perspectives on India's future.
He asserted that the notion of a Hindu Rashtra cannot be interpreted through the lens of Western nation-state concepts, claiming it is egalitarian and does not discriminate based on religion or language.
“Historically, when Hindu Rashtra has been prominent, it has not been about religion or faith,” he remarked. “It ensures equal justice for all, with no discrimination.”
Bhagwat suggested that everyone residing in India shares a common ancestry and culture, stating, “We do not think that unity requires uniformity. Diversity can also embody unity.”
He further explained, “In examinations, we often tackle simpler questions first. Thus, we should first organize those who identify as Hindus and improve their lives. Eventually, those who do not currently identify as Hindus may begin to do so, and we are already witnessing this shift.”
He highlighted that Hindu traditions are inherently diverse and inclusive, urging, “Do not attempt to change others; have faith in your own beliefs. Accept others without insult, and avoid conflicts over differing practices. Those who adhere to this philosophy are Hindus.”
Additionally, Bhagwat addressed the RSS's distinct identity, clarifying that it operates independently from the BJP-led government. He noted that while discussions on conduct, ideology, and values occur, the RSS does not impose its beliefs on anyone.
Although he refrained from naming specific organizations, his comments were interpreted as a reminder of the BJP's independence. While the RSS does not engage directly in electoral politics, it is perceived to influence the BJP's political strategies and policymaking.
