Synopsis

Ahead of Prime Minister Modi's visit to China, the Chinese embassy highlighted historical cultural connections by sharing images of Lord Ganesha. Modi is scheduled to meet President Xi Jinping in Tianjin for crucial talks amidst strained India-US relations.

Just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi lands in China, the Chinese embassy in India struck a softer note. As India marked Ganesh Chaturthi, the embassy shared striking images of Lord Ganesha carved in China’s Tang Dynasty and painted in the famous Mogao Caves.

“Ganesha’s image can be found in China’s Tang Dynasty and the Mogao Caves! A beautiful reminder of how China and India shared art, faith, and culture centuries ago,” wrote Yu Jing, spokesperson of the Chinese embassy in India, on X.

The timing is no coincidence. Modi is set to arrive in Tianjin on Saturday evening from Japan, where he will hold a much-anticipated meeting with President Xi Jinping on Sunday. As per a PTI report, sources suggest there may even be a second round of talks before the official banquet at the SCO Summit.

On Monday, the Prime Minister will join the SCO Summit, which brings together 10 member nations. He is also likely to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin before returning home.

This is Modi’s first visit to China in seven years, and perhaps his most crucial. The SCO gathering is being seen as highly significant, especially with India-China ties under close watch and India-US relations strained after Donald Trump’s steep 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports.

While Modi is expected to hold several bilateral meetings during his trip, his talks with Xi Jinping will be the most closely watched, not just in Delhi and Beijing, but across the world.

With a cultural gesture of Lord Ganesha opening the stage, many will be watching to see if the two leaders can find common ground in more than just ancient history.
