Google is now making its Translate app not just a translation tool but an all-in-one language assistant. The company has recently given a major upgrade to Translate with the help of AI and machine learning. After this update, features like live conversation mode and language learning practice have been added to the app.
In the official release, the company said that every month, people translate about 1 trillion words through visual translation in Google Translate, Search, and Lens, and Circle to Search. Now the company is making it easier to overcome language barriers, thanks to AI.
According to the company, the facility of real-time conversation with audio and on-screen translation has been introduced through the Translate app. Improving the experience of existing live conversations, the advanced AI model will now make it easier to have live conversations in more than 70 languages, including Arabic, French, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, and Tamil.
Explaining how to use the new feature, the company said that after opening the Translate app on Android and iOS, one can tap on 'Live Translate'. After this, select the language to be translated and start speaking.
The transcript will appear with translation.
The company said, 'You will hear the translation aloud and see a transcript of your conversation in both languages on your device. The translation easily switches between the two languages being spoken by you and your partner and intelligently recognizes the pauses, accents, and tones of the conversation. This allows you to have a natural conversation with just one tap.'
Google Translate's live capabilities use the company's advanced voice and speech recognition models, which have been trained to help distinguish sounds. This means that the user gets a high-quality experience in the real world, such as at busy airports or in a noisy cafe in a new country. This new live translation feature is available to users in the US, India, and Mexico.
In addition, a beta Language Practice feature will be launched this week, which will include customized listening and speaking exercises for English speakers learning Spanish and French, as well as Spanish, French and Portuguese speakers learning English.
