Concerns Raised Over Waste Management at Sainik School
Bhubaneswar: On Saturday, the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) reached out to the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) requesting an urgent update regarding the Temporary Transit Station (TTS) located on the Sainik School premises.
In their correspondence, the OSPCB noted, “We have received a public complaint from residents in the vicinity of the Sainik School Temporary Solid Waste Transfer Point.”
The letter included a copy of the complaint and requested a detailed compliance report by September 3.
This action by the OSPCB followed a complaint lodged by the ‘Sainik School Banchao Alia Gada Hatao Abhiyan,’ which highlighted the adverse effects of the Gadakana dumping yard on the health of local inhabitants.
The group is demanding prompt action and accountability from the Civic Body for its inability to address the issue and relocate the dumping site.
They have also threatened to stage a protest outside the OSPCB office on September 1 if no measures are taken.
In light of these developments, the OSPCB has instructed the BMC to provide its response by the specified date.
It is important to mention that local residents, along with the ‘Sainik School Banchao Alia Gada Hatao Abhiyan,’ have been actively protesting for the removal of the Gadakana dumping yard from the Sainik School area, citing severe pollution concerns.
They have raised alarming health issues, claiming that emissions from the yard are leading to skin ailments and respiratory issues among those living nearby.
