Context of the Maratha Reservation Controversy Background of the Maratha Reservation Dispute

The establishment of the cabinet subcommittee by the Maharashtra government comes in the wake of intense protests regarding the demands for Maratha reservations. This decision was made shortly after Maratha activist Manoj Jarange announced the end of his indefinite hunger strike in Mumbai. Jarange, who had been on a hunger strike for five days at Azad Maidan, declared a 'victory' for the protesters after the state agreed to key demands. Surrounded by supporters, Jarange ended his fast on Tuesday evening by drinking juice provided by senior minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil. The government has assured that eligible Maratha families in the Marathwada region will receive Kunbi caste certificates under the OBC category. In addition to the caste certificate announcement, the state government has also agreed to provide compensation and government jobs to the families of those who lost their lives during the anti-reservation protests. Previously, the protesters had demanded a 10% reservation in jobs and education under the OBC category.
