Inauguration of Green Hydrogen Facility

The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated a green hydrogen pilot plant at the V.O. Chidambaranar Port on Friday, alongside laying the foundation for several port projects. During his address, Sonowal highlighted that the Sagarmala initiative is enhancing the livelihoods of coastal communities through the establishment of new fishing ports. He mentioned that under Sagarmala, four significant fishing ports have been developed in Kunthukal, Poompuhar, Sinamoton, and Mukaiyad, which have created better livelihood opportunities for coastal residents.


Transforming Tamil Nadu's Maritime Role

Sonowal emphasized that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, maritime innovation and connectivity are transforming Tamil Nadu's role in India's growth narrative. He stated that through commerce, connectivity, innovation, and collaboration, they are reclaiming that legacy. The minister noted that innovation in the maritime sector has also made significant strides in Tamil Nadu. He pointed out that the National Centre for Port, Waterway, and Coastal Technology at IIT Chennai has provided crucial engineering solutions. Additionally, he mentioned that Chennai is set to host its first maritime hackathon marathon in 2025 to promote innovation and collaboration.


Engineering Solutions and Future Initiatives

According to Sonowal, the National Centre for Port, Waterway, and Coastal Technology established at IIT Chennai has already delivered numerous engineering solutions. Recently, a unique maritime hackathon marathon was launched in Chennai to accelerate innovation, problem-solving, and collaboration across the region.
