A chance to win a colossal amount is approaching as the $1.8 billion Powerball jackpot is set to be drawn on Saturday, September 6, with the official drawing scheduled for 10:59 p.m. ET, according to USA Today. Ticket sales close one to two hours before the drawing, depending on local rules, so players should plan accordingly.

What are the chances of winning?

The odds of hitting the jackpot are extremely low, about 1 in 292 million, the lottery association said. For context, the US population is roughly 342 million, according to the Census Bureau. While the jackpot grabs headlines, smaller prizes of $1 million or more are also available for those who match some, but not all, numbers.

How to play the Powerball

Powerball tickets cost at least $2 and are sold at convenience stores, gas stations, grocery stores, and other locations in 45 states, Puerto Rico, Washington, DC, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Some states also offer online ticket purchases. Players must select six numbers—five white balls numbered 1 to 69 and one red Powerball numbered 1 to 26. To win the jackpot, all five white balls (in any order) and the red Powerball must match the winning numbers.

Jackpot payout options

Winners can choose between the annuity option, which pays the estimated $1.8 billion over 29 annual installments that increase by 5 per cent each year, or a lump sum payment of $826.4 million. Historically, most winners opt for the lump sum.
