Understanding Pitru Paksha
Pitru Paksha 2025: In the context of Sanatan Dharma, Shradh Paksha is regarded as a sacred time dedicated to honoring ancestors. Scriptures indicate that during this period, acts of kindness, donations, tarpan, and tree planting are believed to please the ancestors, who in turn bestow blessings. The Puranas highlight trees as divine entities. Just as the souls of ancestors find satisfaction through tarpan, planting virtuous trees is seen as a deed that yields eternal benefits for them. Astrologically, if one has Pitru Dosh in their horoscope, planting auspicious trees during Shradh Paksha can mitigate the severity of this defect and invite the blessings of ancestors.
Trees to Plant During Shradh Paksha

1. Peepal Tree
In sacred texts, the Peepal tree is identified as an embodiment of Lord Vishnu. The Vishnu Purana states that worshiping the Peepal tree allows ancestors to attain heaven. Planting a Peepal tree during Shradh Paksha is deemed highly auspicious, providing peace to ancestral souls and fostering happiness and prosperity within the family. Astrologically, it is considered the most effective remedy for alleviating Pitra Dosha.
2. Banyan Tree
The Banyan tree symbolizes immortality and is referred to as Vatvriksha. According to the Skanda Purana, planting a Banyan tree liberates ancestral souls from the cycle of rebirth. During Shradh Paksha, this tree satisfies the ancestors and blesses the family with progeny. It also represents longevity and stability.
3. Bael Tree
The Bael tree holds a special place in the hearts of devotees of Lord Shiva and is considered sacred. The Shiva Purana mentions that offering Bael leaves pleases ancestors and brings prosperity to the family. Planting a Bael tree during Shradh Paksha fulfills the desires of ancestral souls and removes obstacles in the lineage.
4. Neem Tree
Planting a Neem tree during Shradh Paksha is believed to grant salvation to ancestral souls while providing descendants with health and vitality. From an astrological perspective, it helps alleviate issues related to Saturn and Rahu, which can be exacerbated by Pitra Dosh.
5. Tulsi Plant
Tulsi is revered as Mother Tulsi in Sanatan Dharma. Its significance is highlighted in the Padma Purana and the Garuda Purana, which state that ancestors are particularly pleased when lamps are lit near Tulsi. Planting a Tulsi plant during Shradh Paksha brings peace to ancestral souls and ensures the blessings of Lakshmi upon the family. Astrologically, the Tulsi plant is believed to attract Jupiter's blessings, alleviate Pitra Dosh, and enhance children's happiness.
