Significant Changes in Dhubri Police Administration

Dhubri, Sept 12: Following a violent police crackdown on Koch-Rajbongshi demonstrators in Golakganj that resulted in over a hundred injuries, the Dhubri police have initiated a major reshuffle within their ranks. This includes key changes at both the Golakganj and Gauripur Police Stations.

An official directive from the Senior Superintendent of Police, Dhubri, was released on Thursday, announcing that Inspector (UB) Navajyoti Roy, who previously served as the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bilasipara Police Station, will now take on the role of Circle Inspector (CI) for Golakganj. Additionally, he will also serve as the OC for Golakganj PS, the focal point of the recent unrest.

In a related move, Inspector (UB) Ratul Haloi, who was the CI for Golakganj, has been reassigned to Bilasipara PS as its OC. The reshuffle also includes significant adjustments at Gauripur PS, with the cancellation of a prior transfer of SI Nabajyoti Lahon from Chapar PS to Golakganj PS as temporary OC, indicating a thorough restructuring of the police force in response to the incident.

According to police sources, these changes are intended to rebuild public trust and mitigate the rising discontent following the violent events.

Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah visited the injured individuals in Dhubri on Thursday, confirming the suspension of the Golakganj OC and announcing a DIG-level investigation into the incident.

However, the All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) has expressed dissatisfaction with the reshuffle, deeming it inadequate. Union leaders have warned that their protests will escalate unless justice is served and those accountable are brought to justice.

The unrest erupted on Wednesday evening when police used batons against a large protest rally organized by AKRSU and its West Dhubri district unit. The demonstrators were advocating for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and a separate state for the Koch-Rajbongshi community, marching from Chilarai College towards Golakganj Bazaar. As the rally progressed, police and paramilitary forces intervened, leading to a confrontation that resulted in a baton charge on the crowd, injuring over a hundred individuals, including women.
