Devastating Impact of Rainfall in Himachal Pradesh
Sanjay Sharma
Since late June 2025, Himachal Pradesh has been grappling with severe rainfall and the resulting natural calamities. The state has endured significant losses, including tragic fatalities and extensive damage to infrastructure and property.
Prime Minister's Aerial Survey and Meeting
On September 9, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted an aerial survey of the most affected regions in Himachal Pradesh. Following this, he held a high-level review meeting at Gaggal airport in Kangra, attended by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, BJP state president Rajeev Bindal, and other officials.
Emotional Encounters with Victims
During his visit, the Prime Minister met with 19 representatives from the hardest-hit areas, who shared their harrowing experiences. This emotional interaction showcased a compassionate side of Modi, who was visibly affected. A touching moment occurred when he held an orphaned girl named Nitika in his arms, symbolizing his empathy.
Refusal of Ceremonial Gifts
Upon landing at Gaggal airport after the aerial survey, the devastation he witnessed was evident on his face. In a somber gesture, he declined any ceremonial gifts, flowers, or caps from the officials present, reflecting the seriousness of the situation.
Commitment to Recovery
During the review meeting, the Chief Minister and Chief Secretary provided a comprehensive report on the disaster's impact. In response, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the collaboration between state and central governments, stating, “We are one government. In this hour of crisis, we must work hand in hand to bring Himachal back on its feet.”
Financial Aid and Support
He expressed a personal connection to the state, saying, “Himachal is my home. I have worked here, eaten here, and drunk its water. I owe a debt to this land.” To aid immediate relief efforts, he announced a financial package of Rs 1,500 crore for urgent rehabilitation and reconstruction, along with compensation of Rs 2 lakh for each life lost and Rs 50,000 for the injured. He assured that teams from the Centre have already assessed the damage and more will be deployed to assist in recovery.
Historic Assistance
This marks a significant moment in the state's history, as it is the first time a Prime Minister has provided such substantial and immediate support, showcasing not only leadership but also a deep emotional bond with the people of Himachal.
Gratitude from the Local BJP Unit
The Himachal Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of the residents, thanking Prime Minister Modi for his understanding and support during this challenging time.
