Protestors at Jorabat in Assam on Thursday blocked the vehicle of former Meghalaya Education Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) legislator Rakkam A. Sangma, forcing him to rely on an Assam Police escort to continue his journey to the Garo Hills.

Protestors, mostly cab drivers, prevented Meghalaya registration tourists' vehicles from entering Assam at Jorabat. There was a massive traffic jam in the area. Several tourists were seen pleading with the protestors to allow them to move.

Meghalaya based All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA) is pressing for a ban on Assam tourist taxis operating in Meghalaya’s tourist destinations. Tourists coming from outside generally opt for the Guwahati Shillong circuit as a tourist destination.

The association wants cabbies coming to Meghalaya to drop the tourists at designated points and from there taxis of Meghalaya would take them to popular tourist destinations.

Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur stated, “It’s saddening to see our youth, who earn their livelihood driving tourist vehicles, forced to take to the streets for their rights.”She sought Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s intervention.

Manuel Badwar, secretary of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), said the strike cannot be treated as a routine protest since it is tied not only to livelihoods but to the state’s growth itself.

Meghalaya or Abode of clouds attracts tourists round the year however during summer’s tourists flock to Meghalaya in large numbers. Shillong which is also known as the “Scotland of East” generally over the years emerged as a prime tourist destination during summers in Eastern India.

Assam has an interstate border dispute with Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Nagaland.

The Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF) have already expressed fears that the AKMTTA’s move could cause serious harm to the state’s economy, so much of which depends on tourism.
