UIDAI's New Initiative for Aadhaar Enrollment

Aadhaar Update: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has declared that starting September 21, new Aadhaar registrations and mandatory biometric updates for children aged 5-7 and 15-17 will be offered at no cost. This initiative is designed to keep children's biometric information current as they grow, alleviating any financial strain on families. This move is expected to benefit a significant number of children, especially since the government had previously mandated biometric updates for Aadhaar cards for minors.

The biometric updates will include capturing fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs for children in the specified age groups. UIDAI announced this initiative on social media, stating, “Aadhaar new enrolment and mandatory biometric updates for children between the age of 5–7 years & 15–17 years are free of cost.”

Steps to Complete Aadhaar Enrollment

To initiate the process, visit the nearest Aadhaar enrollment center, which can be located through the UIDAI's official website or the mAadhaar mobile app. Begin by collecting an Aadhaar update form from the center and filling it out. Afterward, submit the form along with your biometric data. The center operator will conduct a fingerprint scan, iris scan, or both for verification.

The Aadhaar enrollment procedure involves visiting the enrollment center, completing the enrollment form, capturing demographic and biometric data, and providing proof of identity and address. After this, you will receive an acknowledgment slip containing your Enrollment ID. Importantly, Aadhaar enrollment is free, and you can visit any authorized center with your identity and address documents.

Timing for Mandatory Biometric Updates

As per UIDAI guidelines, biometric data (photo, fingerprints, and iris scans) must be recorded when a child turns 5 years old. A de-duplication process will occur at this stage, and this update is free of charge. The second mandatory update is required when the Aadhaar number holder reaches 15 years of age, at which point all biometric data must be provided again. This update is also free.
