Kolkata: The government has instructed ministries, departments and Central Public Sector Enterprises not to spend on gifts in the festival season from public funds. A report in the Economic Times said that the directive came from the Union Finance Ministry. It said not to indulge in gifting from the public funds for Diwali or other festive occasions. The order has come into effect immediately.

The directive was issued through an office memorandum by the Department of Expenditure. It should be noted that the government is focused on strengthening fiscal discipline and reducing unnecessary expenditure. The order categorically states that no money should be spent for gifts or similar items during festive occasions by any wing of the Central government.

It can be mentioned that the order comes against the backdrop of the significant GST cut that came into effect on September 23. The government could be sacrificing Rs 48,000 crore worth of revenue through a wholesale reduction of GST rates and elimination of two slabs at least for the first few months.
