Along the road in Dak Lak Province where his wife was killed in an accident, Nguyen Van Dung has planted 1,000 roses and dozens of flamboyant trees in her memory.

The 40-yer-old says: “I want to dedicate these flowers to my wife and to spread the love. I wish for safety and happiness for every family.”

His wife, Bui Thi Lai, died at 39 in Dec. last year in a traffic accident on Truong Son Dong street, M’Drak commune.

Dung has visited her grave and the accident site every day ever since to pay respect and light incense in remembrance. He has planted rose bushes and flamboyant trees along both sides of the one-kilometer stretch of road.

At the grave he has placed large pots of chrysanthemums with help from relatives to clear weeds.

Dung and Lai started dating while in high school and married in 2010. They worked from nothing to build a small transport company. They had two children, now in kindergarten and primary school.

Lai studied accounting to help her husband run the business while also taking care of the family.

Their life was improving when tragedy struck: she was killed in an accident while delivering lunch to employees. “I was devastated, but I had to keep going for our two children,” Dung says.

The couple’s plans were in limbo, and Dung struggled with grief. Friends said he lost interest in work after his wife’s death. They encouraged him to return to normal life. He gradually recovered but continued to plant trees and flowers along the road, rain or shine.

In August several rose bushes were stolen. Upset, he shared the story on social media and asked people to help protect them.

The post quickly drew sympathy and support. But some criticized him for being too sentimental and said he should stop so that his wife could rest in peace.

But he says everyone has their own way of grieving for loved ones. “I just hope people don’t judge or disturb me.”

Pham Ngoc Quang, deputy chairman of M’Drak Commune, says the flowers improved the landscape and did not affect traffic. “This is a meaningful act for both Dung and the community.”

HCMC-based Psychologist Nguyen Thi Minh says Dung’s actions show loyalty. “They express his love for his wife and instill compassion in others.
