New Delhi: WhatsApp has now added a new option that lets users instantly translate messages within the application. It is currently being rolled out to iOS and Android users in all 180 countries where WhatsApp is present. The feature will help chats between individuals with different languages more easily without the use of a third-party tool.
Android supports six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. iOS users receive a far greater variety of more than 19 languages through the help of the Translate application created by Apple. Some of the popular languages that are included in the iPhone list are French, German, Korean, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese, among others.
How to use translation on WhatsApp
The user just needs to long-press the message and then tap on the three-dot menu in the top-right portion of the screen and then choose the option of ‘translate’ to have the message translated. A list of languages that can be used will come up, and the selected text will be translated immediately. The feature can be used in one-to-one conversations, in groups and even on WhatsApp Channels. Notably, it is done directly on the device, and this implies that WhatsApp is in no way privy to the personal messages of users.
Extra features for Android
Android users have another choice to have the automatic translation of a whole chat. When turned on, all the received messages in that thread will be translated to the chosen language without necessarily having to translate them individually. The feature will, however, require users to download certain language packs to utilise it on Android and iOS.
Availability and rollout
The feature is being rolled out in stages, and not everyone might see it instantly. WhatsApp mentions that the implementation could differ depending on the device. This firm recommends the user update his or her app to have the translation tool whenever it is released. Currently, no schedule is available on when the feature would be featured on WhatsApp Web or desktop applications.
