
New Delhi, September 26, 2025 – Thousands of low-income families in Chhattisgarh and across India are now benefiting from the PM Surya Ghar Free Solar Scheme, popularly known as the Muft Bijli Yojana. Under this initiative, the government provides up to 60% subsidy for installing rooftop solar panels at homes, enabling households to generate around 300 units of free electricity per month.
Residents have reported savings of ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 per month, reducing the burden of high electricity bills. Ramakant, a beneficiary from a village, shared that the savings are being redirected towards essential family needs, and he expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making electricity more accessible to marginalized communities.
Objectives and Benefits of the Scheme
The primary goal of PM Surya Ghar Yojana is to install up to 3 kW rooftop solar systems at homes and provide a subsidy of up to 60%, allowing each household to save around 300 units of electricity per month.

The government provides a subsidy of ₹30,000 per kW, with a maximum of 3 kW, which can amount to ₹78,000 per household. The application process is fully digital and simple:

Provide details such as state, electricity distribution company, consumer number, mobile number, and email.

Once the feasibility approval is received from the local DISCOM, applicants can choose a registered solar vendor for installation.

After the installation, a net meter is installed for monitoring, and the subsidy is directly transferred to the bank account of the beneficiary.
