Mainland China remained the top source market period in the first nine months, with 3.8 million arrivals, a 43% year-on-year increase, followed by South Korea (3.2 million), Taiwan (926,000), the U.S. (622,000), and Japan (617,000), according to the General Statistics Office.
The rest of the top 10 were India (504,000), Cambodia (489,000), Russia (435,000), Malaysia (405,000) and Australia (401,000).
The tourism industry received 4.7 million foreign arrivals in the third quarter, up 23% year-on-year.
Tourism experts attributed Vietnam’s strong performance to favorable visa policies, expanded promotional campaigns, and a series of events held to celebrate major national holidays.
In August, the government waived visa requirements for citizens of 12 more countries — Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland — for stays of up to 45 days.
This expands Vietnam’s unilateral visa waiver list to 24 countries, and the number of countries enjoying its exemption policy to 39.
Vietnam targets 23-25 million foreign tourists by the end of this year.
Thailand welcomed 24.11 million foreign tourists from Jan. 1 to Sept. 30, a decrease of 7.5% compared to the same period last year.
