Fastag update: National Highways Authority of India (Nhai)) Has announced a major change in the toll payment system on national highways and expressways across the country. This new rule has brought relief for those drivers who have yet to be valid Fastag Not there. This revised rule will be applicable from 15 November 2025.
Large relief for non-fastag vehicles
Till now vehicles that did not have fastag, had to pay double the toll fee on cash payments, causing additional financial burden on the passengers. But now NHAI has given relief in this rule. From 15 November 2025, if a driver pays toll through UPI or any other digital medium, he will have to pay only 1.25 times (1.25x) fee. That is, now a low fee will have to be paid for making digital payment compared to cash payment.
Giving an example of this, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) has said, “If a vehicle has to pay a user fee of ₹ 100 through a valid fastag, then it will be ₹ 200 on paying cash, but only ₹ 125 will have to be paid on payment of digital through UPI.”
Fastag Annual Pass Granted Great Response
Recently, NHAI launched the ‘Fastag Annual Pass’ facility at about 1,150 toll plazas in the country. This facility, launched on Independence Day, has so far been bought by more than 1.4 lakh users. After this enthusiastic response of the people, the authority has now decided to provide this new facility in toll payment for non-Fastag vehicles.
Objective behind change
According to the Ministry, this amendment made in National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates) Rules, 2008, works for many important objectives:
- Financial burden reduction: Reducing the double fee on cash payers to 1.25 times.
- Promoting digital payment: Motivate passengers to pay through digital means like UPI.
- Bringing transparency: To ensure better trekking and monitoring by making toll collection system digital.
- Reduce congestion: Reduce cash transactions on toll plazas will make traffic jam decrease and rapid traffic possible.
Note
This step will not only give relief to non-Fastag drivers, but will also strengthen digital payment ecosystem in India. This decision of NHAI will play an important role in reducing the congestion on the toll plaza and making the road travel more convenient.
