36 km long wall – the largest after China’s wall

The biggest feature of Kumbhalgarh Fort is its 36 km long wall. This wall is so huge that it is considered the second longest continuous wall in the world. Often people also call it “Great Wall of India”. Local people say that eight horses can run together on this wall. This wall has been impervious for the invaders for centuries and that is why the fort never came to possession of any enemy easily.

Birthplace of Maharana Pratap

Kumbhalgarh Fort is often seen only from Mewar’s security point of view, but very few people know that it is the birthplace of Maharana Pratap. Maharana Pratap is considered a symbol of valor not only Mewar but also the valor of all over India. Many stories to his childhood still feel alive in the corridors and walls of this fort.

Treasure of more than 360 temples

Another specialty of Kumbhalgarh Fort is a large number of temples present here. There are about 360 temples in the fort complex, out of which 300 are associated with Jainism and the rest are from Hinduism. Neelkanth Mahadev Temple located here is particularly famous. Local belief is that Maharana Kumbha used to worship in this temple every day. This temple still presents a wonderful confluence of religious faith and historical architecture within the fort.

Amazing security system

Kumbhalgarh Fort was built by Maharana Kumbha in the 15th century. The security system at that time still surprises people. The entrances of the fort were made in such a way that no matter how many numbers the enemies attack, they take time to reach the fort. Seven huge gates and secret routes were built in the fort, which could lead the royal family to go out in times of crisis.

Secret tunnels and mystery

The Kumbhalgarh Fort has several secret tunnels which were used during the war. Very few people know about these tunnels. It is said that the network of these tunnels was so huge that from them the soldiers easily reached from one part to another. Even today some tunnels are closed and no one is aware of their secrets.

Amazing sample of architecture

Like other forts of Rajasthan, Kumbhalgarh Fort is also a unique example of architecture. Walls made of stones, carvings of temples, huge doors and high-ramparts increase the grandeur of the fort. The fort is also included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, which reflects its historical and cultural importance.

Geographical location of the fort

Kumbhalgarh Fort is situated at an altitude of 1,100 meters and is surrounded by dense forests all around. Because of this the fort was also naturally safe. It was very difficult for any invader to reach here. The interesting thing is that even today, many remote peaks of Aravali are visible from this fort.

Witness to war and siege

Historians say that the Kumbhalgarh Fort faced siege 13 times, but the enemies failed to win it. Only the vast army of a powerful emperor like Akbar had won it, that too when there was a shortage of water and food in the fort. This incident reflects the strength of the fort and the valor of Mewar.

Today’s Kumbhalgarh – the center of tourism and attraction

Today Kumbhalgarh Fort has become a big attraction for tourists, not just a historical heritage. Every year Kumbhalgarh Festival is organized here, in which the confluence of dance, music and culture is seen. At night when this fort shines with lights, its grandeur increases even more.
