With the arrival of Diwali, demand for gold and silver increases. People buy jewelry during this time to make festivals and special occasions even more special. However, with the increased demand, counterfeit or adulterated jewelry often becomes available in the market. Therefore, before purchasing gold or silver, it becomes crucial to verify its purity and authenticity by checking the hallmark on the jewelry. Simply checking the hallmark isn't enough; it should also be verified to avoid fraud.
What is a Hallmark?
A hallmark is a government certification that indicates that the gold or silver used in jewelry is pure. In India, this hallmark is issued by the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards). Therefore, always look for the BIS logo on jewelry. The jewelry also bears the carat (e.g., 22K, 18K), which indicates the purity of the gold. Additionally, the jewelry also bears a 6-digit HUID number, a unique identification number. Using this number, you can verify the authenticity of the hallmark.
How to verify the hallmark using your mobile phone?
Now, with the help of technology, you can verify the hallmark from your mobile phone, even while sitting at home. BIS has developed an app called BIS Care. After downloading it, you can verify it by entering the 6-digit HUID number on your jewelry into the app.
Download the BIS Care app: Install this app on your phone from the Google Play Store or App Store.
Register: Complete the registration in the app by entering your mobile number.
Find the HUID number: Note the 6-digit HUID number on your jewelry.
Verify: Open the app, go to the Verify HUID option, enter the number, and submit.
Get information: Within seconds, you will receive the jewelry's purity, carat, and other details in the app.
This process allows you to easily determine whether the hallmark on your jewelry is genuine or fake.
