The inclusion of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in India’s ODI squad for the Australia series has drawn criticism from former selector Dilip Vengsarkar. With the first match scheduled for 19 October, the series will mark their comeback to competitive cricket after IPL 2025. Shubman Gill will lead the side.

Speaking to mid-day, Dilip Vengsarkar questioned the decision of the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel to include Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the ODI squad. He highlighted that neither has played internationally since March’s Champions Trophy and both have retired from T20Is and Tests earlier this year—making ODIs their only active format.

“Rohit and Virat have been outstanding players for many years, but if they’re only playing one format now, I think the selectors must make a decision. It’s hard to judge their form and fitness accurately, especially after such a long break from international cricket. Without regular game time, it’s difficult to make a proper assessment,” Vengsarkar said.

While acknowledging their past contributions, he suggested their inclusion may have been based more on reputation than recent performance.

“Rohit and Virat were probably chosen based on their impressive career records. They’ve been exceptional players and have contributed immensely to Indian cricket, winning matches across all formats.”
