Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is soon going to start a special facility to change the journey date of confirmed ticket. When will this facility be available?

As of now there is no option to change the date of confirmed ticket on IRCTC website or mobile app. But according to reports, this facility is expected to start from January 2026. Initially it will be implemented as a pilot project in some selected places. If this experiment is successful, it will be implemented in the entire country. Indian Railways is trying to further improve the convenience of passengers with this step.

What additional fees will have to be paid?

Railway sources say that passengers will not have to pay any additional fee for changing the date. That is, if you just want to change the date of travel, you will not incur any additional expenses. However, if the fare is higher on the new date, you may have to pay the difference in fare. This facility will bring great relief to the passengers, because now the tension of cancellation charge is over!

How many times can the date be changed?

Under this new facility, you will be able to change the date of the ticket only once. That is, once the date is changed, the date cannot be changed again on the same ticket. Railways has made this rule so that there is no problem in the process of booking seats and preparing charts. With this the railway system will continue to run smoothly.

Is booking necessary in the same train and class?

Passengers can also choose another train on the same day or on any other date as per their convenience, provided that train travels on the same route or destination. You can choose the class as per your choice (like Sleeper, 2nd AC or 3rd AC). But keep in mind, if you shift to a lower class, the difference in fare will not be refunded. This rule gives flexibility to the passengers, so that they can choose the train and date as per their need.

What is the deadline for changing the date?

To change the date you must request at least 48 hours in advance. If there are less than 48 hours left for the start of the journey, the date cannot be changed. This rule has been made so that Railways get enough time to prepare the new seat allotment and chart. With this, railway operations will continue without any interruption.

Facility will be available both online and offline

IRCTC is planning to make this facility available both online and offline. Online users will be able to change the date through “Change Travel Date” option on IRCTC website or app. Whereas, if you have taken the ticket from the railway counter, then you will have to go to the nearest reservation office and get the date changed. This flexibility gives the passengers the freedom to choose online or offline mode as per their convenience.
