Columbus Day is being observed on second Monday of each October
Columbus Day is being observed on second Monday of each October. Columbus Day was deemed as such in 1892, when it was established to honor Christopher Columbus' historic voyage. Columbus Day is a federal holiday honoring Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas in 1492 and celebrated by Italian Americans in New York City and beyond.

Americans also observed Indigenous Peoples Day on October 13. While not a federal holiday, Indigenous Peoples' Day has become common in recent years as a way to recognize contributions made by Native Americans and detest Columbus' treatment of native peoples.

President Joe Biden became the first US president to formally recognize Indigenous Peoples Day, issuing a proclamation in 2021. Biden recognized both holidays that year, which President Donald Trump has signaled he won't do in 2025.

Is Social Security open on Columbus Day 2025?

With Columbus Day, also referred as Indigenous Peoples' Day in many states approaching, many social security retirees must be wondering if it will be part of the federal holidays for the Social Security offices. Will Social Security offices be open? The quick answer is No.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) will be closing its field offices around the country on Monday, October 13, 2025, for the federal holiday, reported Marca. That will leave beneficiaries and retirees who depend on presential visits to plan or go online instead.

According to the SSA's official holiday calendar (ssa.gov), Columbus Day is among the 11 federal holidays the organization annually has. The office shuts down all of its local field offices as well as phone service via live representatives.

The AARP also verifies Social Security offices, similar to most federal offices, are shut down on all federal holidays including Columbus Day. (aarp.org). That means, there cannot be neither walk-in nor phone appointments scheduled on October 13.

Will you get online services?

Yes. Though the social security offices will be closed, Social Security online services will be operating as usual. Retirees will still be able to access their My Social Security accounts in order to manage their benefits, print benefit verification letters, update direct deposits, or request any replacement documents.

Computerized phone systems which are accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week will also be available, allowing users to check their payment status or order some forms without the need for human help. The better news for retirees: benefit payments will not be disrupted by the holiday. Since most payments are made electronically through direct deposit, they are automatically made even if offices are closed.

If a scheduled payment falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the SSA usually processes deposits on the preceding business day. This means anyone expecting a deposit around Columbus Day can rest assured it will arrive on time—or even a little early—according to the SSA’s payment schedule.

For those planning to visit a Social Security office in person, officials recommend postponing the visit to avoid potential delays after the holiday. You can find your local office’s phone number and hours using the SSA Office Locator tool at ssa.gov.
